Home Decor
It just makes sense that if you choose your favourite things for your home decor, you'll love your home.
The most important thing to remember with decorating your home is that.....
It really is .....”ALL ABOUT YOU”
ESSENTIALS OF HOME DECOR
Good design centres on your ability to put your own personal stamp and unique style on a room and mould it to become your own space. Decorate your home to reflect your likes, your loves and your lifestyle.
You will encounter several hurdles in your effort to achieve your own personal sense of style.
Architectural structure of the house, geographical location and aspect of the rooms, existing furnishings and family heirlooms, and not at all the least consideration.... is your budget.
DECORATING STYLES
It is important to be open minded, flexible and prepared to take risks as you ponder the style possibilities that exist today. This flexibility extends to being open to the suggestion of change and substitution even extending to replacing a piece which you thought previously irreplaceable.
Be brave ......don’t rush..... Enjoy the experience and reap the benefits.
The days of decorating the whole house in one single style are long gone. Modern day decorating declares that it is quite appropriate to blend different styles by introducing selected feature pieces that will draw the eye of every visitor to your home thus creating a very eclectic decor. An example would be decorating a room in French Provincial Style and introducing a spectacular piece of Asian Antique to the room. This becomes a focal point and a definite conversation piece. A decorating theme or period style can be suggested by the introduction of a few key elements. You don’t have to go overboard to give a room a taste of the Orient, all you need is a few well chosen pieces.
Colour is very simply introduced with your soft furnishings such as cushions, throws and curtains. This can be blended or even matched very successfully with a smattering of the same colour in lamps or porcelain in other parts of the room.
COLOUR SCHEME
One of the easiest ways to change the feel of a room is with a new coat of paint. Different colours evoke different emotions so your first step is determining which mood you want for the new room. If you are a quiet person and feel you need to be pepped up, choose a warm, bright colour to control your mood in a positive way. If you want a room to be relaxing choose a colour that is soothing. Above all we all have our favourite colours so surround yourself with colours that make you happy.
The physical dimensions of a room can be an influencing factor in your colour selection. Walls in low narrow spaces call for light fresh colours that will “open up” the area and create the illusion of more space. Darker colours are known to confine the area.
Here again ... be brave ... try a feature wall in a stunning colour remembering that you can always paint over it if in fact it turns out a bit scary ! Be patient and give it two coats and rearrange your furniture before you make the final decision.
LIGHTING
Light is an essential part of the Home Decor process. Both natural light and artificial light can alter the overall effect of fabrics, furnishings and colours. When selecting colours for a room it is wise to look at the sample in both full natural light and subdued artificial light before a decision is made.
Good lighting can make or break a room. A well placed table lamp will provide mood and atmosphere with its pool of light and decorative effect. The placement of a porcelain based table lamp can be used to introduce a desired colour to another part of your room.
Dimmer switches are a valuable aid to adjusting the strength of artificial light thus providing the required effect and another tip is the positioning of mirrors to reflect light into darker areas. These mirrors can also create the visual effect of making small rooms look larger. |
