Viva México

When I think of luxury travel I picture crystal clear waters, piña colada in hand, enjoying local delicacies during sunset. For me, Mexico ticked all of these boxes. I had been pining to go to the Yucatan Peninsula for quite some time, keeping my eye our for luxury holiday deals. As I couldn’t find an itinerary that was quite for me, I ended up booking most things myself.

Eco Travel

This took up quite a bit of time, but it worked for me on this trip. I wanted to start in Tulum, as I had heard amazing things about eco-lodge Casa Xixim and they were recently featured in a luxury holidays magazine for their villas that are powered by a photovoltaic canopy, insulated by rooftop places and bordering an artificial wetlands system able to catch water waste. Its tranquil bay is protected by a coral reef full of wildlife – it’s no surprise that I made this my first stop.

World Wonders

From Tulum I made my way inland towards Valladolid in order to visit Chichen Itza. As it was low season, I was able to enjoy this Wonder of the World without many people around. I also made it to a handful of cenotes in the area – huge sink holes of natural water to cool off in. From here I headed north towards Rio Lagartos – a small fishing village on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

Luxe Travel

The natural reserve here was declared a marine sanctuary and you can do luxury tours to view hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, crocodiles and a visit to the pink lakes – a natural phenomenon. Then it was time to head back to the beach. I decided to visit a small island off the coast called Isla Holbox – famous for its pristine water, white sandy beaches, and peace and quiet.
